Dances of Plenitude

“He who cannot dance will say, the drum is bad.”
_Ashanti Proverb

Often we approach personal development and other life challenges as if we need to acquire something from outside of us to change. Biodanza flips this around and proposes that everything we ever need is already inside of us and that our dances become a way of recognition rather than acquisition. A powerful example of this is recognising our own power through the Dance of the Tiger.

The Vivencia creates a space in which we move beyond our habitual ways of being and encounter different possibilities in us. This includes stories of lack or judgements that prompt us to seek to change ourselves from the outside in. Creative dances open up the space in which we connect with new possibilities including the way we perceive ourselves.

Each Vivencia offers us an opportunity to experience and embody many more dimensions of ourselves. Dances of vitality can connect us with our own inner strength. Our capacity to give and receive love can become evident through dances of affective interaction with another and the group. In Biodanza our dances become more than just physical movement. Through embodying feeling they become the avenues through which our ever emerging identities expand beyond any limitations. The more we explore and expand our dances, the more emergent we become so that we stop seeing ourselves as a finished object but rather as a fluid, dynamic, and ever changing stream of life itself.

SOCIAL DANCE

“The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word.”
_Mata Hari

Biodanza is different from many other social interactions in this world. Often this difference exists as a gap between what we are experiencing inside and who we show to the world. Sometimes by necessity this becomes a negative experience as who we present is determined by expectations, fear or being defensive. And sometimes quite innocently we are simply wanting to impress or project a particular persona.

Biodanza offers us a beautiful invitation. This is to enter the dance without any sense of performance or concerns about doing the right movements. The music, movement and intentions for each exercise or dance is carefully constructed to create conditions of affective trust in which we are free to let our guard down. In these dances we surrender any social roles and projections and meet each other in our naked humanity. Through the dances we start to discover a form of social dancing that is full of meaning and the vitality of life.

In this respect our dances in Biodanza are empowering. We encounter ourselves. We drop habits, expectations, fear, or looking good so that our experiences feel honest and liberating. In this sense Biodanza becomes the space where our dances become the open heart in which we meet each and value each other, and more importantly ourselves.

INNER DANCE

“It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer.”
_Shanna LeFluer

So often we think of dance as movement of the body through space. However this external dance is mirrored by an inner dance. As our body moves externally so does something shift internally. The first we perceive through our kinetic sense which allows us to experience our movement and position in space. The second is closer to interoception where using internal sensations both physical and emotional we allow an inner landscape to unfold.

This lies at the core of Biodanza where our dances are not about presentation and performance but designed to awaken what we call “a Vivencia”. This is a lived experience through the body that includes the vitality of movement, the affective heart, our creative impulse, and our capacity to transcend all limitations and feel the fullest and most expanded version of ourselves.

This is all built into the structure of the class. Biodanza is not haphazard or random but based on a precise methodology that makes it become a technology for experiencing the ecstasy of life. The dances outside of us change the dances inside of us. Every Biodanza Vivencia becomes a fluid integration and harmony of these two dances, the visible dance of the body, and the invisible dance of what allows us to feel fully present and alive in the moment.

When Music becomes Movement

“Music is the shorthand of emotion.”
_Leo Tolstoy

In Biodanza, music is not just background, nor is it included based only on aesthetic appreciation. It lies at the heart of our Vivencias and is one of the main technologies we use to bring the experience to life. Rhythm, for example, works in a remarkable way in the brain, activating motor areas involved in movement. This auditory-motor coupling and entrainment brings together music and movement, which in themselves are already powerful. Together they create dance, an ongoing conversation between mind, body, and heart.

Dance animates the body so that we bring to life and make visible what we are feeling, amplifying the expression of our identity. In Biodanza, the relationship between music, movement, and intention becomes central to the Vivencia. We are not merely moving to the music but rather, as Rolando Toro, creator of Biodanza, encourages us, we become the music.

Music engages a widely distributed network in our brain involving auditory, motor, reward, emotional, and predictive systems. Here lies the power of the Vivencia, where music becomes movement, movement becomes feeling, and feeling becomes a lived experience.

The Dance between Us

“If a tree does not know how to dance,
the wind will teach it.”
_African Proverb

Meaning when we dance in Biodanza doesn’t depend only on my own movements but emerges through relationship, whether we are dancing with another or dancing in the presence of the group. Each dance provides a language rich in communication, sometimes through touch but also distance. The quality of our movements and presence carry information about ourselves and about how we meet another.

A single note does not necessarily make music which usually emerges through the relationship of a series sounds and the intervals between them. In the same way a dance is more than one movement. Dance is created through a continuous conversation where each movement carries the one before it and opens possibilities for what might come next. As we respond to each other we create a shared experience in which the anticipation of is what to come and the pleasure that arises from the resolution and surprise from what emerges starts to give meaning to the dance.

We hold up a mirror for each other in the dance because the way in which we enter into relationship reflects something about how we meet life. As we become comfortable and build trust in the group we see that what once may have begun as distance can become intimacy. If there was any fear it can give way to vulnerability. When we create dances through relationship we find that if we change the way we dance with each other we may also begin to change the way in which we experience ourselves and the world. Biodanza may mean “dancing with life” but its not a rigid life but rather an ever changing and emerging and enriched life full of meaning.

Dancing beyond the familiar...

“The real voyage of discovery is not in seeking new places,
but in seeing with new eyes.”
_Marcel Proust

Being an Illuminator is about the quality of presence we bring to another person allowing them to shine through. The question on the other side of this equation is how open or willing are we to receive this? Do we keep holding onto the impressions that we have already formed about someone or are we willing to let them surprise us. This is more than a philosophical or intellectual proposition, it is something we can work with and embody through dance.

New experiences of others through dance can naturally interrupt any fixed pictures we may have formed about them. I notice this clearly when introducing dance in corporate or institutional environments where colleagues usually hold limited and often stereotypical ideas about each other. By introducing something like dance which is different we interrupt the predictions and assumptions we have made of the other.

This is where the methodology of Biodanza becomes interesting. It often offers an opportunity for people to access aspects of themselves that for whatever reason lies dormant or hidden. Someone who we normally perceive as say reserved may suddenly dance with extraordinary vitality. Our perception of other can change when we let go the thinking and set ideas and encounter the other through the interaction and playfulness of dance. Vulnerabilities dissolve when we find synchrony in our dances with each other. The power of dance is the proximity, contact and shared experiences that allow our relationships with each other to shift and change. This is truly a beautiful way to let life unfold with freshness beauty.

The Unfolding Dance

“Your life does not get better by chance,
it gets better by change.”
_Jim Rohn

Life is constantly changing and so are we. Our identity is not fixed but a living potential and Biodanza provides the space for that potential to emerge through direct experience. I have an image of ourselves as having a stable chore surrounded by continuous change. This reminds me of Rolando Toro’s concept of the Genetic Potential. I like the word “potential” because it suggests that although each of our unique identities have deep roots, these are not fixed. Our identity is always emerging, always becoming.

This is exactly what we experience when we dance. Our movements emerge and change in response to music, movement, and encounter. In Biodanza we specifically work with invitations that allow us the possibilities to feel and dance into sensuality, creativity, vitality, love, and beyond. For some exploring the unfamiliar is challenging. However throughout each dance there is still only one person dancing, holding the experience, and creating meaning. A changing environment and the any different dances do not take away who we are. Each dance allows more of us to emerge, to be embodied, and to be integrated into our lives.

Biodanza does not invite us to explore ourselves intellectually, nor are our dances symbolic representations from which we can remain detached. Each Vivencia is a real experience, intensified through music, movement, and our interaction with others, lived fully in the here and now. Every dance becomes an opportunity for another aspect of our potential to emerge, enriching both who we are and the life we live.

dance-ILLUMINATORS

“Am I being an Illuminator?”

Every participant in a Biodanza vivencia plays a vital role. Beyond our own personal experiences, our presence also shapes the experience and even the identity of the other people in the group. A Biodanza Vivencia is not just about the music and dance; it is also brought to life through the presence of everyone in the group. Rolando Toro, creator of Biodanza, reminds us that we become who and what we are in relationship with. In this context the quality of our presence influences how others experience themselves.

Biodanza creates an enriched environment in which positive eco-factors allow life to express more of itself. When we dance with another with openness, acceptance and deep affectivity, we become one of these eco-factors. Sometimes this is subtle and quietly undervalued. We do not seek to change anyone – but rather to recognise the light, beauty that already exists within each other. In this way we become “Illuminators”. Instead of diminishing the other through judgement and expectations, we seek and reflect back the light we see in them.

Dance naturally teaches us this quality of presence. When we are truly present, we respond to the music, to ourselves, and to our partners with sensitivity rather than habit or control. Instead of allowing our attention to drift or moving rigidly we engage with sensitive feedback. In this way we all feel seen, valued, and fully alive. We become the mirror that shines the wonder of life back to each other.

Dance Life First-Hand

“Live the present intensely and fully, do not let the past be a burden,
and let the future be an incentive.”
_Carlos Slim Helu

Biodanza privileges lived experience over conceptual understanding. Much of what we know about life comes from elsewhere, books, social media, and the experiences of others. While this knowledge may be useful there is a profound difference between understanding something intellectually and living it directly. When we engage with life through unity of mind, body and heart, we live life first-hand and then knowledge becomes more real and personal.

Biodanza offers us this opportunity through the Vivencia. Each session becomes a laboratory for life where we dance to experience directly in the moment. The Vivencia is a snippet of reality lived authentically and with intensity in the moment. The Vivencia is neither symbolic nor representational but a direct encounter with ourselves, others, and life.

Through dance we connect physically through the body, integrate emotion and movement, while focus of mind brings intention. This is direct experience not analysing life from a distance. These lived experiences are beyond concepts – they are the lived moments in which we come to know joy and connection. Meaning is not the ideas of philosophers but a knowing that becomes part of our lives.

the E X P A N D I N G dance

“Movement is life. Life is a process.
Improve the quality of the process
and you improve the quality of life itself.”
_Moshe Feldenkrais

The movements available to our bodies often relate to the possibilities available to our lives. How we move and interact in the world shapes our experiences, including our sense of self, our self-image, and identity. We all develop our own unique and familiar ways of moving, which are patterns we are hardly aware of, but which shape our individual picture of the world. This range of movements reflects the range of our lived experience.

One of the most powerful and rewarding invitations of Biodanza is to quietly extend this range with positive reinforcement of accessing of our potential for joy and meaningful connection to life. Sometimes this is done by letting go of control where we allow the body to discover movements that we could never have planned. And sometimes the invitation is to intensify our movements, not necessarily by always making them bigger but by infusing them with vitality, presence, and feeling.

As the movement vocabulary expands our dances so does our capacity to experience life. Biodanza invites us to discover new ways of feeling, relating, and expressing ourselves. Through our dances we have the embodied experience of realising that every new movement brings with it a new possibility for becoming. Identity in Biodanza is not static it is an ever-evolving integration of our physical, emotional, and cognitive experiences – the integration of mind, body, and soul.

Dancing to INHABIT the body

“We do not have a body – we are our body.”

When we see our bodies as objects, something we possess rather than inhabit we lose touch with the reality that every emotion, memory, and experience is lived through our bodies. Our bodies are a sensing presence through which we live in constant relationship with ourselves, others, and the environment. Our bodies are not objects to be managed but the place where we experience life fully.

Through dance we begin to sense this wholeness when we realise that mind and body are really one. When we surrender completely to our dances the illusion we live with of separation between our mind and body dissolves. The movements of our bodies when we dance are not just physical but rather infused with emotion, feeling, and meaning. This stimulates our innate creativity, where, instead of being spectators of our lives we actively participate in shaping them.

The act of shaping doesn’t come from conscious action but rather from a willingness to surrender and fully inhabit our bodies. In Biodanza we work with the notion that identity is an embodied process, so that we are not simply living in a body – the ghost in a machine – but we are continually forming and creating a continual expression of who we are becoming. When we fully inhabit the body, Life inhabits us. In the Vivencia we get to experience this as joy, bliss and ecstasy when our dance moves beyond simply being an action or activity.

The FREE BODY - structure without limitations

“Freedom is not the absence of structure.
It is the absence of unnecessary limitation.”

Biodanza is not “free dance”. It has a clear methodology and theoretical model that participants to discover the freedom of being authentically themselves by encouraging movements that are not governed by habit or the need to perform. True freedom arises when our dances reach that place within the body where we release patterns of tension, inhibition and self-consciousness that quietly shape our lives.

The Free Body is not without structure or direction. Rather, it responds authentically to the present moment instead of being confined by habitual patterns and expectations. The Biodanza facilitator suggests, guides, and invites, not to dictate, but to encourage us to surrender into new experiences that become the path to expressing who we really are.

Our tendency to “doing what I want” is often driven by the Western ideal of individualism and the Ego. When we shift away from this paradigm we enter the vulnerability of not being in control. However as we explore new movements and experiences through dance, we find that the more we surrender and the less we hold on, the more we awaken something much deeper expressing an innate freedom that has always existing within us.

The Listening Body - active participation of presence

“If you listen to your body when it whispers to you,
you won’t have to hear it scream.”
_Deborah Jane Sutton

Often we are quick to speak and perform. When we do this we lose the power and wisdom that can be found in “listening”. Underneath the constant chatter of our thoughts our bodies are always listening tuning into emotions, sensations, and the subtle currents of life that flow beneath consciousness. Dance has a beautiful way of helping us rediscover this innate capacity when we let go trying to control our dances and instead learn to sense into them.

Listening is not passive. It becomes an active participation with the present moment when we pay attention with our bodies to the music, the subtlety of our connections to our dance partners and the collective energy of the group. In Biodanza there is an additional voice through the enunciations of the facilitator who sets the intentions for a vivencia, an experience. Deep listening to all of these our dances transcend habitual patterns of movement so that our response opens us a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.

The Listening Body also teaches us to trust what we feel. Dance becomes an opportunity to connect with our own inner world through proprioception (our ability to sense our movements through space), and interoception (our ability to read our bodies’ inner messages). By setting aside all preconceptions to listen more deeply, we discover through our dances the inner wisdom of the body that extends beyond the limits of a thinking mind.

The Creative Body – dancing beyond habit

“What you believe about the universe shapes
what you think is possible in the universe.”
_River Higginbotham

Creativity is a fundamental expression of life itself. Through our dancing body we connect to and rediscover that creativity lies within the body in a place beyond all habitual patterns.

There are many faces of creativity. Sometimes it appears as a forging force, moving with strength, direction, and clear intention. This is the masculine/yang expression of creativity. At other times it emerges through surrender, shaping and forming in response to the moment, allowing movement to unfold naturally without needing to know where it will lead. This is the feminine/yin expression of creativity.

What unites these expressions is when we improvise in our dances. When we transcend all the limitations of movement allowing our dances to emerge spontaneously, movement becomes a conversation with the unknown. Tapping into the body’s intelligence these dances allow us to feel and think in a more expansive and divergent way, revealing possibilities, insights and ways of being that could never be reached through reason alone. Improvisation is not necessarily “making movements up” but rather the body’s capacity to respond authentically to the present moment.

In Biodanza language creativity is often described as the ability to innovate one’s existence. This links the dances of our creative body directly to everyday life. As we become more creative in our movement so we become more creative in how we relate, solve problems and shape our lives.

THE PLAYFUL BODY - dancing into Joy

“The curious beauty about African music is that it uplifts
even as it tells a sad story.”
_Nelson Mandela

Joy is not something we think ourselves into nor is it something we reach outside of us to bring into our lives. Joy is something we awaken from inside. These feelings are directly linked to our level of participation in life which becomes possible when our vitality increases and we have more energy available for spontaneity, curiosity, and play. In these moments creativity awakens and life becomes less predictable and more engaging.

Dance is able to change the way we feel. This is very much dependant on the nature of the movement and the selection of movement. A carefully curated Biodanza Vivencia can lift our spirits and bring us into spontaneous encounters with joy. Nothing is planned and nothing is prescribed. The creative muse that lives in each of us simply emerges allowing us to release the things that sometimes obscure the path to joy and fun.

Playfulness is not childish but rather those instinctive moments in which we allow our movements to emerge spontaneously and without agenda or filters. To connect to the Playful Body we simple immerse ourselves in magical moments of creation that appear as dances full of vitality, creativity, and joy allowing us to experience the immediacy of being alive.

Shifting DANCES

“I see dance being used as communication between body and soul,
to express what is too deep to find words for.”
_Ruth St. Denis

Identity is not only cognitive but is an embodied experience that becomes organised into patterns of movement, affect, posture, and relationship. Our autobiographical memories play a huge role in how these patterns are organised. The greater the intensity of a life event, the stronger is its emotional imprint, contributing to the patterns through which we experience ourselves and the world. The brain does not remember independently of the body, and movement can alter emotional and memory processes.

Many shamanic and traditional healing practices involve dance, recognising that transformation occurs through the whole organism rather than through thought alone. Dance allows us to discover new ways of organising habitual patterns held in the body. This is done by introducing new postures, rhythms, and movements that open up new emotional possibilities and new ways of relating to life. To dance is not to recall and “deal with” emotions, memories, or trauma, but rather to allow awareness to participate in an ongoing process of reorganisation and renewal.

When we dance into this ever-changing flow, we open ourselves to many possibilities. Sometimes memories and emotions arise and are embraced as part of the process. Sometimes old patterns soften and dissipate, releasing us from ways of being that no longer serve. Yet perhaps most importantly, dance allows us to embody possibilities that have not yet been lived, awakening insight, creativity, and the courage to dance a new future into being.

DANCE OF FOURS

“Being present is being fully connected to all things.”

Across many traditions the relationship to animals is integrated within the body as an awareness that connects us to shared instincts and characteristics. In Biodanza, dancing the archetypes, of which the animals are a part is not about imitation but rather a powerful way through which we can awaken their qualities which are already within us. Each archetype opens a different doorway revealing the forces of life that shape how we relate, create, feel, and transform.

Each archetype that we dance is never a self-contained experience. The Serpent, Tiger, Hippopotamus, and Heron all link to what in Biodanza we call the Five Lines of Human Potential: Vitality, Sexuality, Creativity, Affectivity, and Transcendence. These are not separate dimensions but expressions of one living continuum brought to life and integrated through our dances.

To dance through the archetypes is to experience identity as something fluid, alive, and responsive, rather than as something fixed and unchangeable – especially if we also experience this immobile self as broken. Through the dances we connect with the forces that weave us together, instinct, feeling, and imagination which allow us to live life with an integrated greater wholeness and expression.

Transcendent dance of the Heron

“Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success
if they are dedicated and passionate about what they do.”
_Nelson Mandela

In Biodanza, the archetype of the Heron invites us into a different quality of movement that incorporates lightness and freedom. Unlike the powerful intensity of the Tiger or the primal fluidity of the Serpent, the Heron is born of the vision of height, flight, of the perception or an open horizon and of the infinite.

When we dance the Heron we move with elegance, grace, and levity connecting to the power of ascension and harmony. Much like the Heron which digs into the mud before it flies, we too ground our dances in instinct before we dance our way upwards and much like the grace of flight we dance into the mastery of spaces. The Vivencia of levity transcend physically and symbolically the gravity that keeps us rooted in the everyday so that we expand our awareness and consciousness ever higher and ever wider.

These are the dances where in a way we are “stepping back” by “flying higher” so that it is possible for us to see life in its entirety. Whereas focus and immersion in any situation or problem could be limiting, our vision from up high gives us perspective and contexts that open up a plethora of possibilities. In this way the dances of the Heron are both transcendent and liberating.

DANCE the agility and strength of the TIGER

“Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”
_Maya Angelou

When we dance the animal archetype of the Tiger in Biodanza we connect with agility and strength. Just like all felines we explore the movements that begin along the back, gathering power, as the spine awakens. This tension becomes charged so that our dances open and expand with focus and intention. The tone in our bodies changes so that the sensation we feel is filled with presence.

Like the tiger that does not waste its energy, our movements are economical, elegant and exact. In dance this appears in the way we shift weight across the feet, how the pelvis follows the spine, and how the eyes remain attentive to the space around us. A slow circling step can become charged with magnetism when the dancer moves from the back and shoulders rather than from isolated gestures. The harmony of the feline emerges through this integration of strength and fluidity, where movement becomes alive with alertness and grace.

In Biodanza the symbolism of the tiger is fire. This fire is like a radiant intensity that gives passion and beauty to our movements. Through the dance we feel the intersection of being grounded yet expansive. Each movement expands into the space around us with precision. Dancing the tiger allows us to embody all these qualities which together become a vibrant affirmation of life.

Hippopotamus - deep pleasure and surrender to life

“Surrender is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding to,
rather than opposing the flow of life.”
_Eckhart Tolle

As one of the four animal archetypes we use in Biodanza, Rolando Toro chose the hippopotamus to represent water. Its name is rooted in the Greek for “river being,” evoking the slow world of rivers, mud, and abundant landscapes. Across many African traditions, water often represents a living portal to the spirit world below. While much of Western thought imagines spirit as something above and distant, indigenous cosmologies locate the sacred beneath the surface, in water, where unseen forces dwell.

The dance of the hippopotamus invites us to remember that spirit is not elsewhere, but here within the body, within sensation, and made accessible through deep surrender, allowing pleasure to connect us to the flow of life itself. We allow any feelings of guilt to dissolve as we symbolically wallow in the muddy waters, without care or consideration for the “should-be doings” of the world. We take time out to return to ourselves.

In dancing this archetype, we are invited into the wisdom of instinct, which guides us toward deep nourishment on all levels, and to recognise satiety, the knowing of when enough is enough. The hippopotamus is also a social animal, its body sustaining an ecosystem that includes birds that feed by cleaning its skin. In this dance, we rediscover the fullness of being where pleasure, instinct, and connection flow as one towards life.
